to gut a device

I've been going through file recovery on a ten-year-old laptop. It's interesting to see what sorts of cached images and stuff are on there.
Something about hard drives are so fascinating to me. I had to remove it from the aforementioned laptop (which I've never done before), and it's just so cool that such a little rectangle can hold so much. That thing could probably fit a lifetime's worth of photos, of documents... all hooked up to the laptop. That's the device's lifeblood, almost like its brain. And I can just pry it out? Even though the laptop's dead*, its soul can still stick around for a while.
(*fine, I don't know if it's dead. what I know is that I can't find the charger, and also it hasn't been used for ten whole years anyway, so if it wasn't dead then then it may have been by now)
